While the University of Mississippi was no exception in disallowing African-Americans from segregating the university, in its case prior to 1963, it was made an example. Someone has to the example right? Because it was made an example, there has been a seemingly impermeable level of disgust, resentment, and fear for some to attend. I'm not afraid of much of anything so I welcomed the challenge. As I reflect on my challenges and my feats (which were far greater) I am glad that I made that decision. From time-to-time, I do wonder what attending an HBCU would have been like. But, that's neither here nor there. I am what I am AND thankful for it. Attached is an article critiquing a historic event on the campus. I am very proud of my alma mater and look forward to helping to demystifying the stigma. Every institution has or does deal with racism. But so does America? See the article from Yahoo! below. The statue is posed as if it is striding toward a 17-foot-tall limestone portal topped with the words "courage," "perseverance," "opportunity" and "knowledge."
"This is a day to rejoice," said U.S. Rep. John Lewis (news, bio, voting record), a Georgia Democrat, who delivered the keynote address to about 1,500 people who attended. "With the unveiling of this monument, we free ourselves from the chains of a difficult past. Today we can celebrate a new day, a new beginning, the birth of a new South and a new America that is more free, more fair and more just than ever before." Meredith, who lives in Jackson, attended the ceremony but was not a speaker.

After the ceremony, he posed beside the statue for photos with former Gov. William Winter and autographed printed programs. The monument was built with $160,000 in grants and private donations.

The ceremony included remarks by university Chancellor Robert Khayat; U.S. Rep. Roger Wicker (news, bio, voting record), R-Miss.; Meredith's son, Joseph, who earned a doctorate in finance from the university; and Freeman.

"Mississippi is a much better state today because of James Meredith, and this is a much better university," said Freeman, a Mississippi resident. "Thank you, Mr. Meredith."
Lewis brought the crowd to its feet by recounting his childhood and his time as a national organizer of civil rights activities, including the historic March on Washington in 1963.
Lewis, who was beaten by a mob in Alabama in 1961, praised Meredith and university leaders for fostering acceptance and equal access.

"This is a monument to the power of peace to overcome violence," he said. "And it is a monument to the power of love to overcome hate."

After Gov. Ross Barnett tried to block Meredith's admission in 1962, President John F. Kennedy used National Guard troops to restore order. The soldiers were bombarded with brickbats and Molotov cocktails by a mob of hundreds of whites — students and others — who chanted, "Two, four, six, eight, we will never integrate." Two people were killed in the riots.

The leafy Oxford campus, in the hills of north Mississippi, also contains a Confederate soldier statue as a tribute to students who fought in the Civil War. The statue of Meredith is about 100 yards away, separated from it by a building that still bears bullet scars from the integration fight.

Copyright © 2006 The Associated Press. Hear we are in Your presence, Your holy holy presence; Lord of the universe we're in awe of you. I sense Your presence and I feel Your power. Your hand is mighty upon me, and I'm in awe of You. You're so awesome, Lord You're awesome. Our God is an awesome God. We stand in awe of you."

This song was written and performed by an up and coming gospel artist named Izzy. I first heard this song on the radio (95.7 Hallelujah FM). OMG. I was breathless. I also heard the song at a time when I had just recently completed one of the most daunting tasks of my personal and professional lives. As you may determine from this blog, I've been studying for the CPA exam for the past 7 months. That in itself has been more than I expected. But, it was more because I what I learned about me, not so much about executing the exam. I knew that was not going to be a cakewalk so I was ready for that. What I learned was more about me: what I really want, where my personal weaknesses are, and most importantly what is MOST important to me.

I've been boiling over on the inside waiting to post this experience. This may be part I since 7 months is a long time. I'm setting the atmosphere in this post. The words to that song are so true and have manifest themselves in my life, before I heard the song. I am all about words in music. Yes, I want it to sound good. But what's most important is how what you say and how you say it impacts others. I also say that people will not always remember what you say, but will remember how you made them feel. You can only do that if you can effectively communicate a message...Not just notes on a page. Do you feel me on this?

I have successfully completed 3 of the 4 sections. I have to retake the last one, but I'm not worried. Someone told me the other day that I'm in my season. I truly believe that. I want you to share your experiences with me that have been life changing. Have you been in, or are you in, your season where it is your time? By that I mean, it's your time to be blessed and all things revealed to you. Everything thing that has been promised is manifesting itself? We learn from sharing. So now that I've set the atmosphere...we'll begin. Part II to come next week. Much love.

Be well!

"I'm Still Here"

"I'm still here. This CPA Exam/Study journey has been one that has taught me a lot. I've taken three of the four exams now. The last one is August 31. I know that I passed the last two, but I haven't been given the official word yet. I passed the 1st one. It's almost over. Once I take the Regulation/Tax section, I'm done. I am so excited, yet focused. I will have to blog about this experience. I've learned soooo much about myself throughout the past 6 months. I'm so blessed. I promise I'll tell you guys all about it. I've not been able to post since I've been so focused. But this is my week break between exams. I'm back on the grind on Sunday night. Please continue to pray for me and I'll do the same for you!

Be well!!

Check out my man Dennis Rodman. Despite his faults and issues, there is something so exotic and sexy about him. My man knows how I feel about Dennis. LOL.... He could be slanging his di@@ or selling drugs. So I ain't mad at him for keeping the cash flow going...even if this seems ridiculous. Click here

Note: The CPA Certificate is motivation only. Man, so much that I learned, or should have learned, in school is coming back. It's going a lot better than I expected. I still haven't received any scores yet, but I "see myself in the future." I know that I am an heir to all things that God has for me. I also keep in mind that I can't go to the next level or where He wants me to be until I attain what I began.

I saw this article on the Advocate.com site. I was so saddened by it. It made me think and consider when my partner and I decide to adopt or conceive (either he or me) a child. We have to get those details squared away in the beginning. God forbid we break up after 6+ years. But I'd be heart broken to loose all ties with my son or daughter. All I can say is that she should not give up. She was a provider for her partner and her their child. She deserves more. Breakup or no, you don't just treat someone like that. You bought a house together and decided to have a child. I'd be made as hell, personally. And I'm sure she is...But she should never give up.

BTW....I realized today that I need to get a little more serious about my workouts. I need to loose 10 lbs...Quickly. I already think I'm hottt...But why not get hotter (LOL)! Here's the article. Let me hear from you all....

Kentucky supreme court rules against lesbian in child custody dispute...
The Kentucky supreme court has unanimously ruled against a lesbian seeking joint custody of a child with her former partner. Chief Justice Joseph Lambert, who wrote the opinion, maintained that Brenda Fawbush was not the primary caregiver, despite participating in supporting and raising the child.

Over a six-year period, Louisville residents Fawbush and Teresa Davis raised the girl, who was a newborn when they brought her home from the hospital. Three years ago, the couple split up, and Davis, who had legally adopted the girl, took her and cut off contact with her former partner. Fawbush sued, seeking visitation and joint custody rights, but the Kentucky court ruled against her. The justices warned in the ruling that Kentucky law could affect all nontraditional caregivers, such as grandparents who raise a child when a mother cannot. The 7-0 vote upholds a lower court decision, which said that although Fawbush was the primary breadwinner, she was not the primary caregiver. According to the court, under Kentucky law she has no standing to seek custody or visitation. Sorrell, a lesbian from Springfield, Mass., who has performed about 150 same-sex marriages as a justice of the peace. "There's a lack of treating an entire group of people with love, dignity and equality."

Massachusetts' gay nuptials and San Francisco's short-lived same-sex wedding spree in 2004 were credited with creating a conservative backlash that fueled Bush's re-election. Yet gay marriage activists pointed to Tuesday's primary elections as evidence that sexual orientation is irrelevant in politics.

The Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, a political action committee funding lesbian and gay candidates, reported that nine of its 51 endorsed candidates either won primaries Tuesday or earned enough votes for a runoff.

Winners included a lesbian running for a seat in the Alabama Legislature who made it to a two-person runoff, an Iowa lawmaker who won re-election after coming out as gay during his first term, and a lesbian who could become the first openly gay lawmaker in the Arkansas Legislature.

The amendment's supporters, meanwhile, angrily denounced the Senate for refusing to put the matter up for an up-or-down vote. Robert Knight, director of Concerned Women of America's Culture and Family Institute, said he was insulted by comments from some senators that gay marriage was not a pressing national issue.

"There's nothing more important than protecting marriage and families, because without them the United States faces a bleak future in which government is daddy and mommy and the state keeps growing to pick up the pieces of the shattered social order," Knight said in a statement. As a participant of Denny's Fast-Track minority-development program. Denny's then, according to the YPSI complaint, violated the terms of its Fast-Track program and demanded an "exorbitant sum of money to remain in business."

"YPSI merely wants to be treated the same as the non-minority Denny's franchisees," said Norman Yatooma, principal of Norman Yatooma & Associates, and lead attorney for the case. "Denny's and YPSI negotiated the agreement and it now appears that Denny's is going back on its offer to guarantee financing and ensure the success of its minority franchisees."

Denny's responded in a statement, calling the allegations "false and without merit."
The statement also claims Denny's did not go back on its offer and blamed Andre Snyder of YSPI Corp. for the failed relationship between the two companies.

"In the late 1990s, Mr. Snyder participated in our Fast Track franchise program created to increase Denny's minority franchise base. He completed the required training, and purchased a Denny's restaurant, taking advantage of the special financial package offered to qualified candidates," Denny's said in the statement. "Mr. Snyder's franchise relationship with Denny's ended only after he failed to fulfill his financial obligations. By failing to fulfill these obligations, Mr. Snyder effectively terminated his agreement with the company."

As DiversityInc readers know, this is not the first time Denny's has been accused of discrimination. During the 1990's, Denny's faced a series of well-known discrimination lawsuits involving several cases that accused servers of denying or providing inferior service to people of color. In 2005, seven men of Middle Eastern descent sued Denny's for $28 million in damages after they were kicked out of a South Florida location and compared to terrorist Osama bin Laden.

Denny's decision to implement racial-sensitivity programs stem from the 1993 "Dyson, et al. v. Denny's, Inc" case in which six black on-duty officers in the U.S. Secret Service were refused service for more than an hour when they attempted to order breakfast. Meanwhile, their white fellow officers at a nearby table were served without incident. After the six officers filed a lawsuit, thousands of other customers reported that they had experienced similar discriminatory incidents at Denny's Restaurants nationwide. Denny's paid the more than 130,000 litigants in this case $17.7 million. Denny's consent decree also placed it under an extensive court order to provide nondiscrimination training to its employees and to monitor and report future instances of discrimination.

Who still eats at Denny's and why are they still in business??? He can mend your brokenness. He has miracle to fit your needs. Once you trust Him, you will receive." I cannot tell you how that song has hit home for me over the past month or so. That one, coupled with Donald Lawrence & Blanche McAllister’s "These Nails" have carried me through the tests, trials, and triumphs I have faced and will face. What are you talking about??? Here goes....you know how I do it.

Since February of this year, I've been studying intently for the CPA exam. To date, I've completed 2 of 4 parts of the exam. While that has been and continues to be a challenge, what in the world ever comes easy that's worth having? Nothing I know of. Anyhow, I'm also in a position in my career where a promotion is on the horizon. Because of that, I've accepted increased responsibilities. Those responsibilities made the past two weeks, in particular, most challenging for me. I was on the road in NY and NJ, working 10-12 hours a day, and then having to find time to study and workout, AND stay in touch with my hubby. Who's motivated in all that?

Each day and night, I take time to give God thanks and praise for His continued blessings. As well, I meditate on my day, read some scripture, and sing (which happens throughout the day). These rituals, that have become part of my lifestyle, keep me grounded and focused. I know that I want to move to the next level in my career and my life. Those things don't happen when you loose focus of your goals. There are soooo many distractions, but I promise God has kept me.

Corporate America is and has always been like crabs in a barrel. When you're trying to do what you need to do to be promoted, everyone sees and tries to keep you down. As a leader, it's sooo important to know how to follow. Because I've paid my dues, been faithful, and treated people right over the years, being placed in the leadership roles has not been challenging on the respect front. But when you try to wear so many hats, it definitely weighs you down. That's where my BROKENNESS came in. Fighting off the haters and struggling to stay focused.

But my healing came in when I remember that "I am an heir (DLawrence)" and "Giants die, the bigger they are, the harder they fall (DLawrence)."

Even though Monday begins the next phase of studying for the exam and continued battles on the job, I ready.

What I think I want to do here, when I get a chance, is review some CDs (new and old releases) and maybe a few books. So much has gone into what has gotten me where I need to be. I want to share with others who may be going through the same or similar situations. I've learned that we, as Americans, Black Men, Gay Men, and others, are such a take, take, take, society. It's only when you GIVE that you experience the true essence and happiness life has to offer. I'm growing through the examples of Christ. Additionally, strong black men like CDP, my father, my grandfather, Keith Boykin, Kenneth Winfrey, and Fratman06 (not sure if I even knew your real name but bloggers know who you are), Donald Lawrence, Byron Cage, E. Lynn Harris, James Earl Hardy, Martin Luther King, LHD, Essence Hemphill, and the list can go on forever, have helped me to become the man that I am and strive to be.

While I've been broken, and may be again, I am healed. "It's a new season" and "I'm going to another level" (Israel & New Breed). I want to take whoever is willing along for the ride.

P.S. As if you hadn't noticed by now, I love Gospel music. I'll be using it a lot more here as the time goes by. I echo this sentiment I found on A-Z Lyrics: "If you've ever felt down or doubted the plan He has for you, just pop in a Byron Cage CD and listen to his music lyrics – it will undoubtedly lift up your spirit. And this is exactly what the Prince of Praise wants you to feel, a renewed kinship with the Lord through the lyrics of his gospel songs. I've missed you all sooo much. I've been a man on a mission for the past five months. I'm at a place where I'm ready to go to the next level in my career. But, I have some self-improvement to do. I've been diligently studying for the CPA Exam. I've taken 1 part and will be taking the next in May, July, and October. It's a long process, but I travel so much and have other obligations that I have to take in stride. My goal is to reward myself on my birthday (in October) by adding those three letters behind my name. I can see it now. I've been fasting, praying, studying, and really getting to know more about myself throughout this process. I'll then reward myself for Christmas with a new job (if it be God's will)! I'm sure my partner will love that. I want him to have nothing but the best. Please leave me shout outs. I do check the sight pretty frequently, I just don't have the energy to update it. Working all day, studying, and handling all my other obligations (mainly to the church) leaves me little time or energy. But God is able! He's brought me this far and I know He'll carry me through. Please think about me when you can. I love you guys.

Oh yeah. I tried the Yahoo! 360 thing and it didn't really work out like I anticipated so I'm back. See the story here: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/24/nyregion/24choir.html

During this time of year, so much happens and so fast. Please be on high alert for not only yourselves but those around you. For me, take the time to restore at least 1 relationship that has been bruised or severed. What better time than the holiday? I'm working on that in my own life and it's one of the best things I've ever done. More about that later...!

Love you guys and happy holidays! (Not being PC, just including them all!!! LOL )

So...about the lemonade

I started this job that appeared to be a great opportunity. For the first two weeks, it was. Then the management of the project began to show their true colors. They were booking 90+ hours each week, unbeknownst to the rest of the staff. As well, they were not producing any results to the client. Needless to say, they let them go this past Thursday. Knowing more cuts were sure to come, the rest of the staff was let go on this past Friday. While we did get that week's pay and pay for the next two weeks, it was one of those hard lessons you learn in life. Keep in mind; I left a permanent position to obtain some career-boosting experience and to make more money. So what did I learn from this????

1. Consulting is a crazy world. You have to be financially and mentally stable enough to handle the ups and downs that come with it. Basically, if you are single and do not have a nest egg or other income--like a pension or retirement benefits--you may not want to do it long-term. Short-term between jobs is ok if you must. Or, if you have significant other who can support you when there are no opportunities and can provide health benefits (PROBLEM FOR US HUH! UNLESS YOU LIVE IN A STATE OR CITY THAT WILL ALLOW DOMESTIC PARTNER BENEFITS.) I'm trying to support my partner and myself while he finishes his Master's Degree. I have to be stable.

2. Make every experience count! While this job ended 1.5 months after it began, I did learn a lot. I learned more about people, how other companies work (this was a 2 for 1 since the consulting firm differed from the client), what it takes to consult, more about my strength and resolve. It's so easy to trust, praise, and honor God when all is well. This experience was totally unexpected, but I trust and believe God. What we sometimes don't realize is that we've been thru worse things that have built our resolve. We just have to put it all in perspective. While losing a job is traumatic at any stage in life, when you realize that God will never leave or forsake you, and He's never failed in your life, YOU WILL MAKE IT!!!

3. Don't burn bridges. Yes, it's cliché' and people say it all the time. But, I left my prior job on a high and they expressed that they'd hire me back. That's a plus because they plan to do just that (I should start Dec. 1). On the flip side, while I wanted to blow up my consulting client’s office and curse everyone in the building, I didn't. I bowed out gracefully and actually thanked them for the opportunity. That was nobody but God interceding at that moment. I had already lost respect for the lady in charge because of her unethical behavior. She even said "the same thing happened to me [fired from a job] and I learned from it." She was right, but how untimely was that statement? Then too, she hadn't learned too much, besides how to stab people in the back!! Anyhow, I didn't give her the satisfaction of seeing me or anyone else breakdown. She looked like hell that day, so she felt some remorse I guess. She knew what she was doing was wrong. I could make another post on just that....!

4. Build bridges. Whether you are looking to get a new job or just keep the one you have, build bridges both internally and externally in your profession. In times where you may lose your job or want to move, it's easier when you have a base to build upon. That also helped me to trust that everything would be fine. I learned that lesson a long time ago. Networking is not a dirty word....do it!!

5. Trust God. I don't put this last because it's the last or least important lesson learned, but because 5 is my favorite number :-) Whatever higher power you believe in, lean on it at all times. Build a bridge or relationship that is so personal and powerful that you don't have to worry when life throws you lemons. When you do so, the first thing you do instinctively is to make some lemonade.

Let me hear from you....!

"Believing in yourself, is an endless destination. Believing you have failed is the end of your journey." --Sarah Meredith

When life throws you lemons....

This is a preview to a topic I'll address tomorrow. And guess what, time waits for no man! I can't believe it's been almost a month since I last posted. I've been here to check out what you all have had to say. But I have been so busy. A lot has happened in a month. Here's a brief rundown:

1. You know how, in Corporate America, you hear about the inequities in pay, recognition, opportunities, etc. Well, when you actually experience it, a whole new face is added to the situation. I had some eye opening experiences over the past year on my job, but the past few months I realized that I didn't want to be where some of my elder peers are. Stuck in the same job, at the same level, and receiving piece meal raises. Now, I don't dare put myself on their level because I think I have a little more ambition and a few advantages over them, but you never can be too sure. So, I completed a self-evaluation to determine where I saw my career in 2, 5, and 10 years. As a result, I ended up putting my resume' on the market. Not because I was unhappy where I was, but because I want to take advantage of opportunities that would strategically move my career in the direction I desire it to go. I didn't have any expectations. I just sold myself for who I am. As a result, I received several offers but turned down the majority of them. I was in constant prayer and communication with God on this one. He knows and knew what we had agreed was the plan. And, as ALWAYS, He gave me the perfect opportunity. Let me just stop to tell you how good He really is. I got a call from a headhunter one day with an opportunity. Well, after presenting my profile, the client said no thanks. However, a few days later, he called back and said the same company wanted to offer another position that fit me well. After a brief description, my attention was grabbed. I prayed, Lord, you know what I need and what's best. That same day, they phone interviewed me--it was on 15 minutes notice. Good thing I've learned to ALWAYS be prepared for anything. I felt pretty good afterwards, and again went to God for direction and instruction. He told me to wait and not worry and I did. The next morning, during my workout and meditation before work, I again told God to show me. Not 30 mins after I got back home the phone rang (7:30 AM). The recruiter told me that the company wanted a face-to-face interview that day. Ain't God awesome! Long story short, I went. Not two hours later, they offered me a job. When God shows up, He shows out. The question I had, while trying to take a minute to conceive all of this, was if I don't take this job will I kick myself down the road? The eventual answer was yes. There was an opportunity for advancement and professional development over the next 18mos (the same of which I may not have gotten at my old job) and more money. How could I say no? Plus, only God can move like that. I took a few days to think it over and accepted. I started two weeks ago and have not been disappointed. So I say all this to say what? When you feel like you need to make a change, no matter what the situation is, seek your higher power and don't be afraid of the answer. I was afraid to leave the familiar and I didn't hate where I was. But when opportunity knocks, you BETTER answer!

2. Another reason this opportunity came so much on time is that my partner and I recently agreed he would stop working. Not to become a "desperate housewife" but to be able to completely focus on his graduate studies. Requirements of his program were causing strife on the job so we decided he'd quit. All this happened before any job prospects were presented or before the thought of putting my resume' out there. Again, God will show up and show out if you let Him!

3. I have a personal testimony (story) I want to share about my experience in an abusive relationship that began as they typically do, but the end result is no where near what you'd expect. I'm going to post it to Fratman06's discussion thread on Keith Boykin's website. I've been thinking about it since I first saw the thread. But I want to be sure I get it all out. This will be sort of therapeutic for me. I will tell you now that it will be quite lengthy so I apologize now. But I think the story may help somebody.

4. This is not an event, but really a statement. Don't ever think that what you have to offer won't help somebody. What I'm saying is, reach out to your fellow man. There is so much happening in our world. Many young folks are experiencing the things we did, but at a much younger age. We have to step up and be role models and positive examples. I challenge each person that reads this to be a mentor to a young man or woman (or maybe an older one if the need is there) who is living the life. You never know how much it means to know someone cares and will be there. Mom and Dad 9 times out of 10 won't be there; sister and brother may not understand; so who do you have to turn to but someone who's been where you are going. Don't let another person suffer through emotional or physical abuse or depression alone. Don't let someone who does on the wrong path continue. If you just remember what it was that you may have needed when you were where that person is, how can you not step up?

5. In about two weeks, October 24th, I'll be celebrating 27 wonderful years. To some of you, mine is a young age, but baby, I could write my memoir now and it would be volumes. You don't know my story so you may not understand how important this day is and how thankful I am to be where I am today.

Last thing: Remember that people may not remember what you said or how you said it, but they WILL remember how YOU made them feel!

Okay, it's been a month. I had a lot to get off my chest. I will try to do better as this blog continues to develop. Let me know what you're thinking and how you're feeling--regardless of whether I've posted or not.

I want a new tattoo

Currently I have the Chinese symbol for brotherhood and four brands (2 chest, 1 arm, and 1 ankle). So much has happened since I last posted. Katrina. Bush's continued ignorance. Death of a Supreme Court Justice. Birthdays. Southern Heritage Classic. My team (Houston Comets) lost in the conference finals. And the list goes on. I'm just glad to be back. I've been busy traveling. I had a wonderful time in Chicago over the Labor Day Weekend. Then I celebrated my best friend and his partner's birthdays with a party this past weekend. I also attended the 16th Annual Southern Heritage Classic Football Game this weekend. I haven't had this much fun in a while. I think they enjoyed the party. The game was cool. I have a lot that I want to say and much to do with this blog in the coming months. But I'm so tired. Trying to catch up. I do have few questions to pose and I would love your feedback. There is no one theme, just some thoughts and things I want to know.

1. Where is the best place to vacation (resort-style) for a gay couple? (We've been together or 5+ years. I want to do it big next may to celebrate year # 6.)

2. How do you tell someone, who is a friend but not that close yet (known for about 5 months), you don't think your relationship is progressing because you feel used?

3. What's the best gift you ever bought for your best friend's birthday?

4. When did you know the one you were with was THE ONE? How long did, or has, the relation last or lasted?

5. If you're out, how did you know that it was the right time? (I may make another post for this one...!)

Lastly, I'm beginning to read Fred Smith's "Down For Whatever," any comments on the book?

WNBA Playoffs....

I'm a huge WNBA fan. Today was D-day.

He began by giving the text, Genesis 1:1. Immediately upon hearing Genesis, attention focused on him more closely. I had no idea of what to expect. What resulted was not what I expected...at first. The title of the sermon was "Something Within." The text simply stated that "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." From that, he expounded upon the differences between "nothing" and "something." I was a bit perplexed how he got that from that one verse until the end.

His message to us was that before God self-generated, there was NOTHING. As such, God is the only SOMETHING there is. I interpreted those statements as God created all things. Those things created by and pleasing to him are SOMETHING (i.e. order, God, and those things with substantive content). Others are NOTHING (i.e. credit card debt, hatred, and chaos). I know you want to know where he incorporated his response to everyone's responses to the sermon. He subtly made his point. Though subtle, it was poignant and clearly portrayed his opinion. He also gave some definitions of nothing and something that further espoused his topic.

The following were a few of his major points:

1. Nothing kills; Something gives life.
2. Nothing usually doesn't offend someone. Who wants anything bland, devoid of anything meaningful or intellectually or emotionally stimulating?
3. God is the ONLY SOMETHING there is.... (He and the things He create are indigenously conceived.)

He expounded upon #2 by saying that some of us did not agree with the alleged or perceived controversial message by Dr. Bailey. But, he stirred emotion and apparently offended some people. Therefore, he gave you SOMETHING. Man, that was a powerful statement in itself. I know that flew over some of the people's heads, but I think they either caught it on the way home or will soon. While extremely PC, I think his position was implicitly clear.

The sermon consummated with a powerful and spontaneous rendition of "Something Within" by one of the Elders. There's something about those sometimes forgotten hymns. They are power packed with substance and meaning that effectively reaches that "Something" within all of us!

Any comments or questions???

What's up with Oprah???

The following was taken from Yahoo! News. What is your take on it?? Can you blame Oprah for enjoying her vacation? If she says she's going to do a show, I think she will. And, it's nothing for her to have flowers sent, even the day of the funneral, to the family. Is this gossip magazine hating to get ratings????

Winfrey 'Furious' at Snubbing Allegations
Fri Aug 26, 4:40 PM ET

Oprah Winfrey said she is "furious" at allegations that her absence at the recent funeral for Ebony and Jet magazines founder John H. Johnson was a snub of the pioneering black publisher.

A column published Thursday in the Chicago Defender, a historically significant black daily newspaper, questioned why Winfrey didn't attend Johnson's Aug. 15 funeral in her hometown of Chicago. Former President Bill Clinton, the Rev. Jesse Jackson and many notable black media personalities attended the service.

Chicago Defender Executive Editor Roland Martin wrote that many black media figures have been lamenting Winfrey's "apparent snub of the man who single-handedly made it possible for people like Oprah to launch their own magazines and media companies."

In another column published Friday, Martin recounted a tense phone conversation he had with Winfrey on Thursday.

"I am furious at the allegations because it's just not true," Martin quoted Winfrey as saying in his column. "It's not true and it's unfair."

Winfrey said she was in Hawaii when Johnson died and was unable to make it back for the services, according to Martin's column. Johnson died of heart failure Aug. 8 at the age of 87.

She said she sent notes to both Johnson's widow, Eunice, and his daughter, Linda Johnson Rice even offering to provide Martin copies of the notes and a receipt of the flowers she sent to Johnson's downtown publishing company, according to the newspaper.

She also told Martin she plans to pay tribute to Johnson when she returns from her summer hiatus with a TV show dedicated to the man who built a media empire and became one of the nation's wealthiest black businessmen.

See the full story here....

The natural response....

Some have wondered how my Senior Pastor will or has responded to the sermon by Dr. Bailey. At this point, he is still on sabbatical for the summer. His first sermon will be this coming Sunday. I am just as eager to hear his response as many of you are. It was interesting that the topic came up at our choir rehearsal last night. Some of the members felt that his message was interesting and much needed. However, Dr. Bailey appeared frazzled as he fumbled through his pre-written sermon. That may have been a sign that he needed to give us God-inspired thoughts through a Holy Ghost interruption of ther service. That’s when you get the real messages. It lets you know that God is still in control and His will shall be done. Once he decided to speak from the heart and through his passion, he really laid it down. They were more concerned about his minor flaw rather than his overall message. Funny how we get so caught up in the details that we miss the message sometimes. I'll have a follow-up subsequent to this Sunday's (August 28th) sermon. Until then....

Our Queen!

The closest to an African-American Queen in the United States needs our prayers and support. It is my understanding that ministers (preachers, reverends, etc.) are called by God and deliver His divine messages. In doing so, they meditate on the message and research for scriptures to serve as a frame of reference. Well, this Sunday proved to be no different. So why write about it you may ask? The preacher for the hour took us on a journey many of us will never forget.

Many of us are familiar with the scriptures regarding Sodom and Gamorrah. Many ministers, activists, and others use these against homosexuals as justification for their hatred. Well, Dr. Randall C. Bailey, Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Hebrew Bible at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, GA took the Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church on a ride it will not forget. The topic was "What part of KNOW do you not understand?"

The text was Genesis 19:1-9 (Sodom and Gamorrah Destroyed); 32-36 (Lot and His Daughters). The first story began with Lot at the gates of Sodom welcoming two traveling Angels to "turn aside to your servant's house. You can wash your feet and spend the night and then go on your way early in the morning." They eventually agreed. That night, all the men of Sodom came to Lot's house beconing him to "bring them to us , that we may know them. Interpreting know to mean "have sex with" them, Lot begged they not do so. He instead offered his two young daughters. The men refused and proceeded to break down the door. However, the Angels pulled Lot inside and insisted that he flee the town with his family because it would be destroyed.

The second story discusses Lot's daughters taking advantage of him, sexually, by getting him drunk and laying with him. Both did so and became pregnant. Each bore a son.

Reverend Dr. Bailey discussed how African-Americans allow others to call them "niggas" because it "means something different that white people intended." And women can be called a bitch if it's "used properly." In essence, we've been brainwashed. Also, he addressed the embolden words. His purpose was to dispell the myth that this text supports mistreatment of homesexuals. Bailey insisted that know did not mean "to have sex with" the men. Lot made this assumption. And "wash your feet" was assumed to mean to "have sex with you (he planned to have his daughters lay with the Angels because they were virgins).

Taking his sermon as it was, he purported that the sin here was not near homosexual acts, but prostitution of Lot's daughters. He was willing to give his daughters to a crowd of men who he assumed would do so with the Angels. Interesting thought.....! We get so caught up in what we've been taught (brainwashed) to think this text meant that we miss the real point (Exploitation of his youth daughters). So, Bailey suggested, are we agreeing that homosexuality is a GREATER sin than sexploitation of your own children? Man, he struck a nerve in the crowd right there. He challenged everything most of the congregation had been taught and/or believed to be true. Keep in mind, our Senior Pastor was out of the country on a mission trip. Can you imagine his e-mail in-box and voice mail when he returns? :)

Anyhow, Bailey went on to say that this very text is used as justification for parents throwing their kids out of the house (many times at a very young age) for coming out. That's rough....! He said that "the way 'we' treat gays and lesbians leads to their death!" That struck another nerve! Three and you're out....! He insisted that Christians want to "make themselves comfortable with their beliefs." Rather, he purported that "you who are safe, must stand up for those who are unsafe (hetero- and homosexuals). You who are comfortable must stand up for those who are made to feel uncomfortable (the pressure of coming out or the results of doing so). And you who appear to be judged justly must stand up for those who are unjustly judged (when people question...is he gay? is she gay? eww, that's so gay...you know how they do).

Basically, Bailey touched on how homosexuality has been made the "WORST" sin of them all. What many Chrisitians forget is when Jesus said "Come ye who are burdened and heavy laden and I will give you rest." The bible also says that "For God so Love the world (that includes everybody) that he gave his only begotten Son that whoseover believeth on Him should not perish but have everlasting life (sound exclusive to you?)." So where do these haters get off?

Bailey also shared the root of his passion for this subject matter. He had a homosexual brother who died of AIDS. He shared how he spent the latter part of his brother's life striving to let him know that his sickness was not unto death and that it was NOT a curse for his sexuality. He felt like he never convinced his so deeply brainwashed brother of God's UNCONDITIONAL LOVE that he will tirelessly and unrelentingly EDUCATE the world. Strike three...all nerves were stricken by this point.

Another interesting point was that men during slavery were sexually abused by "master" as well. Now that hit me....I couldn't and still can't say that I've ever heard that. I'm going to research that, no doubt. Those house boys, apparently, were eye candy and play toys for master just as much as the women. Why is this part of history not shared and discussed? I find it rather intriguing....!

Though his sermon was choppy and at times disorganized, it was the printer he said, he made some excellent points. He presented the text in a manner I had never experienced. My eyes were opened. But a lot of people were pissed off....!

What do you think?

I'm calling my best friends.....LOL

I saw this story on UK Blackout.com. I've seen it before, but it's great everytime I read it. Peruse it and call all your best friends! LOVE....D

The Value of Friendship

One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school. His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must really be a nerd."

I had quite a weekend planned, parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon. So, I shrugged my shoulders and went on. As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running towards him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.

His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes.My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye. As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks. They really should get lives. "He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!" There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.

I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived. As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to private school before now. I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.

We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books. He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends and he said yes. We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.

Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again. I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday! "He just laughed and handed me half the books.

Over the next four years, ! Kyle and I became best friends. When we were seniors, we began to think about college. Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I was going to Duke. I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem. He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.

Kyle was valedictorian of our class. I teased him all the time about being a nerd. He had to prepare a speech for graduation. I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak.

Graduation day, I saw Kyle. He looked great. He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school. He filled out and actually looked good in glasses. He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him. Boy, sometimes I was jealous. Today was one of those days. I could see that he was nervous about his speech. So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!" He looked at me with one of those looks, the really grateful one and smiled. "Thanks," he said.

As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began. "Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years. Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends... I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.

I am going to tell you a story." I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met. He had planned to kill himself over the weekend. He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home. He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile. "Thankfully, I was saved. My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."

I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.

I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile. Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.

Never underestimate the power of your actions. With one small gesture you can change a person's life. For better or for worse. God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
By: Raymond Browne http://www.ukblackout.com/content/view/409/2/

Hot News....and Requests

Whew! It's hot, as usual in Tennessee. The heat index has been over 100 for abouth three weeks now. But the news is just as hot (or sensationalized I should say....!) Here's a brief recap:

1. Usher is bi-sexual? I'll have to hear this one from the horse's mouth to believe it! But the radar does continue to go off!

2. Some hater decided to defame Alpha Phi Alpha by circulating the most ridiculous e-mail I've ever seen. The one thing that jumps out at me is that they had the nerve to say the E. Lynn Harris was one of the most notable Alphas when he is NOT! He's a member of another fraternity. So that shows how much research they did.

3. The space shuttle made it back safely (sigh of relief). Now why doesn't NASA break down and build a new shuttle instead of recycling the same ones?

4. A group of Muslims decided that the filming of Noah's Ark was not to their liking to they shut it down. How ridiculous are these folks! 1st Amendment rights are so readily abused.

5. Will Smith was left off the best dressed list for Esquire Magazine. How ludacris is that? Those other fellas are fly, but I can think of 10 of them that should have been left off. But that's just me. (Let me know what you think about it.)

I guess that's it for now. I'm gonna have to get better about posting...LOL I'm a busy man, but I'm trying. I'm going to add more links and try to perk this blog up a bit in the near future. Feel free to give me some ideas.

Welcome!!

Hello all!
